Tiny Forests are expanding all over the world, providing a climate shelter, a biodiversity oasis and an outdoor classroom in cities. Tiny Forests promote sustainability, health and security in urban spaces.

In November 2022  I collaborated with Miya e.V. to establish a tiny forest at the school garden with the help of the smallest ones: the children, who make the whole action fun and cheerful, losing track of time. Now these children have a small patch of wild nature in their garden, where they can observe, learn and experience nature from first hand.

Having been trained by the MIYA e.V in Germany, now I am also ready to establish the Tiny Forests and promote a climate-resilient design for our cities to make them more sustainable, healthy and future-proof.

At HNE we are trained to think-in-systems and think-as-designers for today's society and its needs. From product development and entrepreneurship mindset to new market- and policy-based solutions such as e.g. Carbon Credits, Payments for ES, TCA, Tiny Forests.

We are also presented to some of the latest technologies to manage forests and landscape planning such as e.g. LiDAR Technology and Satellite Imagery, and to new future-proof approaches to forest management; e.g. the Scandinavian model, Close-To-Nature, Climate-Resilient Design, fire prevention and monitoring.

As part of the Forest 4.0 course, I could detect priority areas in cities and peri-urban areas with Landsat 8 (Band 10) data, where green infrastructure is highly needed and should be integrated to avoid Heat Urban Island effects in the future.

Regenerative Agriculture reduces the risks associated with a changing climate and it binds carbon in the soil, while producing abundant nutrient-dense products. This makes it especially interesting for the uncertain times of farmers today. In the South of Germany, the Hof Lebensberg is establishing a future-proof silvopastural agroforestry system with alley cropping, keyline design and syntropic techniques. My experience as a Head of the Planting Team, Project Manager and Coordinator in the integrated management plan was a dream to become true. I couldn't be more pleased to have had that experience and take with me all the learnings that came with.

Integrating human activities and natural landscapes in harmonious ways is key for resilient societies. La Sargantana Coop. brings back an old tradition into the Natural Park behind Badalona, a rich area in biodiversity but with a strong pressure of invasive species due to land degradation. Recovering the wines means bringing back life to our mountains and its forgotten potential of to create social capital, natural capital, financial capital and at the end and the beginning of all, inspiration.

In collaboration with them, I created a system of biodiversity indicators to assess the health of the landscape and ecosystem, together with practical recommendations for its sustainable management.

The Mediterranean Basin is a specially vulnerable region to climate change and there is a growing need to innovate with agricultural techniques that support our society with a reliable and strong food system. The Pyrenees have traditionally been a place for potatoes, fodder and grazing animals, but recently wine is taking its place and other cultivars could also do so: Olive trees? Pistachios? La Vall d'Alinyà was our place of study searching suitable conditions for new cultivars that will define the future of the Pyrenees.

Factors of stress favoured by climate change affect the performance of our ecosystems and cut down the ecosystem services provided by forests including biomass production, carbon storage, nutrient optimization, water use efficiency and the creation of habitats for biodiversity. This  increases our vulnerability as a society.

Therefore, understanding the different strategies species adopt in front of periods of stress is crucial to make accurate predictions on how forest ecosystems react and feedback the climate change, to then define assertive management strategies.

When scientists and policy-makers come together, our society becomes a little bit better. In this case, the Institute for Global Health and the Barcelona Provincial Council launched a series of guidelines to assist local councils and improve neighbourhoods and the security, sustainability and health of urban environments. An enriching opportunity for me to have been part of a redaction team build by experts and scientists concerned about urban design, air quality, public transport innovation, urban security and human health.
